NAS Round 2 - Results
Marianna Tassakos, Ju-Lin Lee, Yahvinah Morris and Eli Yarrow represented the Monash University Kickboxing Club at Qualifying Round 2 of the NAS tournament on Sun 7 May at the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre.
Marianna bowed out of Points Sparring early on, but had the edge over Yahvinah in Continuous Sparring. Marianna controlled the distance well, crowding Yahvinah at close range and preventing Yahvinah from using her reach advantage, and eventually winning the bout. Marianna did not do enough to win against her taller opponent in the finals, and placed 2nd in the Female Novice Continuous Sparring division.
As this is only her 2nd tournament, Ju-Lin did a good job in placing 3rd in the Point Sparring and 4th in Continuous Sparring. Her technique and ringcraft has improved since the last tournament, but she will need to push her opponents more to secure a decisive win.
Having just come back from training after being overseas for a year, Yahvinah did well to place 2nd in Point Sparring after defeating competitors from other styles, and 3rd in Continuous Sparring after losing to Marianna and winning against Ju-Lin.
Eli placed 4th in the Continuous Sparring, losing to the competitor who eventually came 1st in that division. Eli puts in a lot of effort into his training, and his determination, perserverance and change in tactics has won him 3rd place in the Male Novice Point Sparring division. Great result, Eli.
I was not able to be ring side at all their bouts, as I had recently been promoted to Assistant Technical Director for Victoria, and was occupied with judging, refereeing and marshalling throughout the tournament. However, from the bouts that I did see, Marianna, Ju-Lin, Yahvinah and Eli showed excellent sportsmanship and represented the Monash University Kickboxing Club very well.
Thank you those of you who came down to support and cheer on our competitors, and special thanks to Albert Teoh for filming all the action!
All 4 competitors - Marianna Tassakos, Ju-Lin Lee, Yahvinah Morris and Eli Yarrow - have placed within the top 5 of their divisions and have qualified for the World All Styles Organisation (WASO) World Championships, which will be held on the Gold Coast on 30 June to 2 July. WASO is a huge tournament that runs over 3 full days and will have over 35 countries competing.
Well done and congratulations to Eli, Yahvinah, Ju-Lin and Marianna! I hope to see them at the World Titles, representating Australia.
